Jacuzzi Bath Remodel
The Jacuzzi bath remodel started in 1968 when Roy Jacuzzi created the world’s first integrated whirlpool bath. It was called the Roman and featured integrated jets with a 50-50 air-to-water ratio. As the years passed, the jetted bathtubs led way to the indoor-outdoor hot tub.
Perhaps, this is why almost everyone refers to a jetted bathtub as a Jacuzzi tub. Much like Kleenex® and Xerox®, Jacuzzi® is a brand name that is often used as a generic term.
For this essay, the Jacuzzi bath remodel will assume a jetted and/or air whirlpool bathtub.
What is a Jacuzzi Bath Remodel?
Let’s start with what it is not. A Jacuzzi bath remodel is not a hot tub or spa. A hot tub is simply the name we would use to describe a tub filled with hot water for people to relax in. Jacuzzi is the name of a company that focuses on making spa products, like whirlpool baths and hot tubs (spas). The easiest way to remember the differences is this:
Whirlpool bath – A tub inside the home bathroom that uses heated jetted water and/or bubbles to reduce overall pain and discomfort.
Hot Tub or Spa – Large outside tub (it’s like a mini swimming pool) that uses heated jetted water and bubbles to reduce overall pain and discomfort. It is also a place to socialize as they accommodate multiple people. Most are above ground.
A walk in bath is not a Jacuzzi bath remodel.
What are the Benefits of a Jacuzzi Bath Remodel?
The greatest benefits of a Jacuzzi bath remodel are hydrotherapy and hydromassage. Hydrotherapy is any method that uses water to treat a variety of symptoms throughout your body. Hydromassage is a therapeutic technique involving the use of water and pressurized jets to help massage muscles and other soft tissues in the body.
Using jetted water, air bubbles, and heated water, hydromassage reduces pain overall. Studies have shown that it helps people with arthritis to increase grip strength. The heat widens blood vessels, which sends nutrient-rich blood throughout your body. The warm water also brings down swelling and loosens tight muscles. The water’s buoyancy takes weight off painful joints.
The jetted and bubbling water provides a gentle massage to help loosen and relax muscles further. Hydromassage is also very relaxing and helps your mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, improving your mood. Improved sleep is another benefit.
What Does a Jacuzzi Bath Remodel Require?
Adding or replacing an existing whirlpool or soaking bathtub typically requires a bathroom remodel. Why? Many homes in Orange County have integrated bathtubs and showers (the bathtub and shower are molded or joined together). Moreover, many Orange County bathrooms are compact. Removing or adding a Jacuzzi whirlpool bath is not possible without removing the vanity, toilet, flooring, etc.
Adding a Whirlpool Bath During Your Jacuzzi Bath Remodel
If you do not currently have a whirlpool bath in your bathroom, you will need to consider the following:
- Add or relocate the drain. This may require increasing the size of the drain.
- Relocate the hot and cold waters.
- Add a dedicated 20amp home run circuit. If your service panel is full or will not safely support the added capacity, you will also need to replace and upgrade your service panel.
- Increase the strength of the floor by adding bigger timbers.
- Add a tub access panel.
- Build the frame for a drop-in whirlpool tub. May require a built-in step.
- Replace windows to the proper code required height and tempering.
- Add an exhaust fan.
If you already have a Jacuzzi whirlpool bathtub and you are simply replacing the existing tub with a newer one, none of the above may be required. Much of this will depend on the type and size of the new whirlpool bath you are purchasing. The year your home was built will also be a factor.
