Walk In Shower

Remodeling your bathroom with a walk in shower allows you to create a spa-like retreat with lots of options such as built-in seats and benches, inset shelves and niches, low-profile linear drains, heated floors, and even steam showers.  Walk-in showers are a smart design move and optimize square footage while creating that at-home spa feel for substantially less than a curbless shower.

Is a Walk In Shower the same as a Curbless Shower?

A walk in shower is not the same as a curbless shower.  A curbless shower flows seamlessly from the bathroom into the shower, with no curb.  A walk in shower has a curb.  Both can usually enjoy the same spa feel options.  The biggest difference between the two is cost.  A curbless shower typically costs much more than a walk in shower.

Can the Bathtub be replaced with a Walk In Shower?

Yes!  This is actually a very common request when remodeling a master bathroom.  Today, replacing a master bathroom bathtub or tub/shower combination with a large walk in or curbless shower is preferred over a tub and shower combination.

What are the Benefits of a Walk In Shower?

Mobility is the greatest benefit of a walk in shower.  A walk in shower is much easier to get into and out of.  The typical bathtub is about 12 to 15 inches high.  A shower curb is usually 4 to 6 inches high.  Walk in showers are typically wider than a bathtub.  Most common bathtubs are about 30 to 32 inches wide.  A shower can be almost any width.  A wider and longer shower allows more freedom of movement.  This makes turning, bending, and washing much easier and safer.

These showers are safer.  Why?  Bathtubs have a smooth surface.  Soaps, shampoos, oils, and other bathing products can make the tub bottom and walls slippery.  Showers typically have tiled walls and floors, creating a non-slip surface.

Walk in showers allow for customization.  Seats, shampoo recesses, rain heads, and body sprays are some of the more common items that make shower bathing more comfortable.  If standing, bending, or balance is difficult, a bench seat will make a world of difference!

What are the Negatives of a Walk In Shower?

Walk in showers have a curb.  They are not wheelchair or walker accessible.  If you use either of these, you are going to want a curbless or no threshold shower.

Walk in showers have an enclosure.  These are typically frameless sliding or hinged glass doors.  Shower enclosures reduce the opening by about half.  Therefore, if your shower opening is 60 inches, only about 24 inches will be open to walk through.  Why 24 inches and not 30 inches?  The 6-inch reduction is due to the frame and handle holding the door back from fully opening.  If you have a larger body composition, require a walker or wheelchair, or have mobility concerns, a curbless shower is going to be a better option for you.
