Bathroom Pocket Door
Bathroom pocket doors are becoming very popular. Why? Clients are discovering how much more room and flexibility they gain when the hinged door is replaced with a bathroom pocket door. DAD’s Construction is one of the few bathroom remodeling contractors in Orange County considered an expert in bathroom pocket door installation.
Advantages of a Bathroom Pocket Door
Bathroom pocket doors are especially helpful in smaller bathrooms and bathrooms with walk-in closets. The typical South Orange County bathroom has a hinged door that opens into or opposite the vanity. Moreover, bathrooms with a separate water closet have hinged doors that barely miss hitting the toilet when they open! If your bathroom has a walk-in closet with a hinged door, the closet shelfs typically interfere with opening the door. How many times have you wacked your knees or toes trying to use the toilet or been the victim of a “door body slam” brushing your teeth?
How about that towel bar or robe hook behind the hinged door that keeps the door from fully opening?
Bathroom pocket doors offer these advantages:
- Maximize your space.
- Allow for easier access into the bathroom.
- Safer than a traditional hinged door.
- Offer greater cabinet flexibility.
Maximize Your Space with a Bathroom Pocket Door
The trouble with the way bathrooms are built in Orange County is that they are designed to minimize space. Builders focus on maximizing their profit, not your convenience. It almost seems like the bathroom is an afterthought. This is particularly true when it comes to the hinged door. Getting hit by the bathroom door while brushing your teeth or washing your face first thing in the morning is never pleasant. In similar fashion, bathrooms with the toilet and shower side-by-side can be particularly difficult to maneuver within.
A bathroom pocket door can give you the space you need for a larger cabinet, additional sink, larger shower, and more space to hang your cloths.
If there is one area where clients are most frustrated, it is the toilet. Many homes in Orange County have bathrooms where there is a door separating the toilet and shower (water closet) from the cabinet (powder room). This door typically barely misses the toilet. When opening the door from inside the water closet, most folks need to bend, turn, or move to the side of the toilet just to get out! People hate this! This also makes using a tissue holder difficult.
People also hate the small round toilets in these configurations. However, the only way to get a nice, comfortable elongated toilet is to remove the door altogether (no privacy) or install a pocket door.
A bathroom pocket door allows for easier access into the bathroom.
Replacing the hinged door with a bathroom pocket door will add about 8-inches to the opening. That’s huge! When dealing with small bathroom spaces, 8-inches goes a long way! Clients with mobility concerns and bathrooms with two sinks will quickly appreciate this extra space for moving in and out of the bathroom.
It is much easier to slide open a door than it is to grasp, steady oneself, and open a door using a doorknob. With a bathroom pocket door, there are no knobs, catches, or hinges to get in the way.
Bathroom pocket doors come in lots of styles. Frosted glass, embossed wood, and mirrored bathroom pocket doors are some of the available styles. Mirrored bathroom pocket doors are becoming exceedingly popular. They provide privacy and allow clients the ability to view their clothing in both natural and artificial light. A mirrored bathroom pocket door is also a terrific way to measure exercise and weight loss progress in complete privacy.
Safer than a traditional hinged door.
Traditional hinged bathroom doors can be dangerous for children and their small fingers and hands. For those with mobility and balance challenges, here are the two situations I hear most often:
- Leaning on a hinged door can easily cause one to fall as the door swings open quickly and balance is lost.
- In confined bathrooms such as where the toilet and shower share the same room, balancing oneself and opening the door has caused many injuries (some serious).
Offers greater cabinet flexibility.
The biggest frustration I commonly hear is how the bathroom door interferes with the cabinet and towel bar behind the door.
Most tract bathrooms have a 21-22-inch-deep cabinet. A pocket door can give you the space to change that cabinet to a more modern 24-inch-deep cabinet. That extra two inches really does make a dramatic difference in added storage and usability.
Tract or standard grade bathroom cabinets have a cabinet door and/or drawer next to the door. Usually, the doors and drawers are broken or damaged because the door was opened into them.
In similar fashion, the electrical outlet is usually on the same wall as the door. Many hairdryers, curling irons, and cosmetic items have ended up broken or damaged on the floor because the cords got caught on the door or doorknob when it was opened or closed.
A bathroom pocket door is a wonderful way to add more flexibility, functionality, style, and safety to your bathroom. A pocket door can give you much needed added space, storage, and peace of mind.
